Rules of the competition
The first five places in each region will compete in the national flock competition to be held on Thursday, 5 November on the Union High School fields, where the national winner will be determined.
As in the past, producers will be able to compete in two sections: namely the unprepared veldt group and the prepared fed group:
In the fed section producers must enter seven animals with a fleece of six months hair. Animals must therefore be shorn in the first week of May 2009.
In the veldt section the producer must enter seven animals with a fleece of four months hair. Animals must therefore be shorn before or on the 1 July 2009.
Since the competition is being held three months earlier than usual, the weights of the two groups of animals have been adjusted accordingly .All field agents have been briefed with regard to these events and can be contacted for assistance.
A section catering for emerging farmers and farm workers has been incorporated and competitors in this section must ensure that their animals have a minimum of four months hair. Three animals, of which two must be ewes, will be needed for entering their section of the competition.
All producers who wish to compete must register with the SAMGA at the Jansenville office (Philip Vosloo) by no later than 1 October 2009.
Other competitions:
Fleeces from the national fleece competition will be on display and the prizes for this will be awarded at the prize giving. During these two days there will also be a competition for spectators and animal handling assistants.
On Thursday 5 November, a programme for scholars from surrounding schools will be hosted where these youngsters will be introduced to the Angora goat industry. This includes an educational session by top industry role players followed by exciting competitions. The schools will be selected and notified in due course.
It is important to note that in order to attend the International Summit (including the conference, the evening function, African evening and gala dinner) the public must register with Philip Vosloo (SAMGA office Jansenville). In order to book it will be necessary to complete the official registration form and payment.
