Ikwezi Municipality Mayor Sizwe Mngwevu said while it was probable that Mohair worn on the streets of Paris or Zurich, was grown in the region, the local community who produced it, was not fully benefiting.

“We need this great resource in our region to produce more opportunities for jobs and wealth than it does do currently.

“Adding value to the raw product locally and developing partnerships internationally as well as locally through the Summit will add impetus to many of the development projects we currently have in place,’’ he said.

“The people of Ikwezi are generally poor, many rely on the industry for their livelihoods but there is also unemployment. We need to think strategically about how Mohair can improve the lives of these people and that is part of what the Summit is all about.’’

Mngwevu said it was the partners intention to engage with international stakeholders about investment opportunities that would be mutually beneficial.

“We are also inviting stakeholders to consider how they might add value to the raw product here.’’

The Ikwezi Municipal area produces up to 50% of global Mohair demand.
